Rivers United defeated Katsina United 4-2 to become champions of the maiden Nigeria Premier Football League U17 Youth League.

The Portharcourt-based team picked 10 points recording wins against Remo Stars, Rangers International and Katsina United and a draw against Plateau United to emerge champions at Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin on Saturday.

Organisers say the league will serve as a reservoir for the Nigeria Football Federation to select youngsters who can represent the nation at junior levels.

Individual awards were presented to outstanding players and deserving individuals.

Rivers United’s Seiyifa Jackson was the topscorer of the NPFL U17 Youth League. He proved his mettle in the regionals and National Finals finishing with four goals.

Another Rivers United player, Ozornwafor Oscar was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP)

Katsina United’s Umar Yusuf Best received the Best Goalkeeper Award

Enugu Rangers won the Fair Play Award

During the event, former Super Eagles players who have been named the NPFL Youth League Ambassadors visited the boys to inspire them with their experience. The players are former Wolverhampton Wanders midfielder Seyi Olofinjana, ex-Blackburn Rovers and Middlesbrough forward, Yakubu Aiyegbeni, Austin Eguavoen and Patrick Pascal.
